Just spotted over-the-counter rate in the Post Office down to 1.09 euro/£

I usually buy currency online from ICE (www.iceplc.com).  Good rates and free Royal Mail Special Delivery.  Right now, they're selling euros at 1.1374

BTW, I wouldn't buy from the Post Office anyway. A few seasons ago they were competitive and convenient, but not now.

I buy from Thomas Cook in the High Street. Just walk in and quote the online rate, she sucks through her teeth, then pays up. It won't ever be quite the best rate, but very easy to buy.

ICE are now charging an admin fee. Just ordered 800 euro`s and got slapped with an admin fee of £4.75, rate was 1.1444. The same transaction six months ago didn`t attract an admin fee. Might be better of at Caxton next time. I have complained about it to ICE, let`s see if they rescind it.

I get the rates from http://travelmoney.moneysavingexpert.com/
It shows not just the rate, but the actual amount you get for your money after any charges they add.
That's also a question to ask when you buy over the counter. "If I give you £200, how much in euros will you give me?" Stops any sneaky add-ons.

I think they've always charged an admin fee for orders under £700.  Your 800 euros would have just been a few pence under £700.  If you'd ordered a few more euros, you'd have effectively got them for free!

Aye, just got a reply from them and you are right, the charge is for transactions up to £700 but it`s a recent charge, I didn`t pay it six months ago on the same transaction and I got more euro`s then. For the sake of another ninetyfour pence worth of euro`s it cost me £4.75, crazy.

Ironic isn't it? If the rate had been only very slightly less bad, (1.148 insead of 1.1444) you'd have got the extra euro to put you over the minimum - so it's still their fault, really.
Just shows how a small number adds up on the total.

The Caxton Card is just brilliant - John put me onto it a couple of years ago and i wouldn't use anything else now to be honest.....Competitive rates and so easy to load and use abroad - brilliant  :) :)
