How about a whinging old fart section? Seems like 98.00% of those are on here. I am sure Cameron will have the statistics for that too? Surely Cameron you must have better things to do with your life like looking for one?

How the hell do you know how many gay people post on here? Oh yes I forgot that people suggesting a good place to eat out or those that have a vehicle to sell normally end the post with "BTW I'm Gay".

Take up a hobby Cameron!!

So the old forum sections dedicated to promoting the island, areas, accommodation, etc were removed ages ago, but we now have a dedicated gay section.

I'm no homophobe, but I can't really see this helping to promote the island, which I believe is the main reason for the forum?

Well i agree with njmw. Get rid of this section. Fuerteventura is the name of the Site lets keep it about Fuerteventura please. Go back to the way it used to be a few years ago.

The President of the Canary Islands Paulino Rivero and the Minister for Tourism Aguedo Montelongo have been  actively trying to attract more Gay Tourism for the past couple of years. I think that the brass plate which Johnny99 posted (which was removed because it didnt fit the page) with an apology to the Gay community was  proof that they want to show that it is time to forget past discriminations and move on. I think this section is important.

You should re post your photos in a smaller size Jonny99 so they can be seen properly.[:)]

Jeez!

Who'd have thought such a simple thing would attract so much vitriol?

It's just a topic - if it is of no interest to people then don't click on it. Live and let live.

As for those complaining there is no section for this or that but there is for gays.. we have said elsewhere we are looking into it and considering how and what we shall do - please bear with us.

Do straight people mention their sexuality in every conversation? Do gay people mention likewise? People post on forums & others reply all the time without the slightest clue of sexuality, race, and (unless the username gives a clue) even gender.

What information does Cameron have to indicate what percentage of gay people post on here?

The Canary islands have long been a holdiay destination of choice of gay people - Gran Canaria in particular. The section is valid & thanks to Admin for putting it up. I've never been to Fuerte even though my parents lived there for a few years. Two needy dogs that I couldn't bear to put in to kennels prevented me visiting.

I don't know what the gay scene is like in Fuerte - so it follows that many other won't too. This section will no doubt, in time, help people find gay friendly bars, clubs, hotels, restaurants etc...

And yes, I'm gay (celebrated 10 year anniversary with my partner in Jan) but I guess nobody knew from MY previous posts. There you go Cameron... maybe we are 0.002% but then again who's counting? Does it matter? If a section helps out a minority group of tourists & residents then GOOD!

We originally asked for a 'Contacts' section, to clean-up the Naturist section, as that was being missused, and offending naturists. In the same post, we suggested that 'someone may like to organise a section for the gay community', meaning a contact section for them, although it would be equally suitable to have a combined forum.
The only two reasons that gays may have for using this new section are: to make contact with each other: to rebuff the tiresome 'anti' comments to which they're being subjected. Other than that, their needs are no different to the rest of us.

I'd be very pleased to hear from any gay people who either agree or disagree with these sentiments

It is a shame that the Forum lost Jonnie99 as a poster. He was a great asset to the Forum with his wealth of knowledge about the Government offices. Hopefully he will return.[:)]

Now the flames are dying down from this newly created section: I agree to an extent with your sentiments islewing. Too much emphasis is put on the sexual side of being Gay. Gay people get up in the morning, go to work, pay their taxes, go home, eat and sleep like most of the population. It is a sad situation that in 2011 gay people, amongst other vulnerable communities, continue to be targeted and beaten quite literally to death for who they are be it the colour of their skin, religion or sexual orientation.

So why a gay section? The old adage 'Birds of a feather flock together'. Generalising a bit here but; The Irish go to Irish bars, English go to English bars, young go to young bars, Spanish go to Spanish bars etc. It's about familiarity and feeling comfortable within your 'environment'. Nothing wrong with that despite those that think in a ideal world we can all integrate as one to live in perfect harmony. Wonderful sentiments but in reality this rarely exists. Having a gay section is not necessarily a vessel for making contact with each other, it is more of a statement that is saying to the gay community that in general they are welcome to the beautiful island of Fuerteventura without prejudice. Whilst you are here then these particular establishments may welcome you more than others, these particular beaches you may feel safe to hold the hand of your partner, this is where the gay community socialise, this is where it is the most 'gay friendly' This is why the Gay flag was created. It became a symbol stating that you are welcome and that this is a safe environment for you to be in and where you will find like minded individuals. Perhaps some may laugh at the flag concept but just have a look at your Irish/English/Welsh establishment and see what is flying inside and outside of  these places then ask yourself why?

So will Fuerteventura become another gay Gran Canaria/Sitges/Ibiza now it is being promoted as a gay tourist destination? I doubt it very much. Fuerteventura has a completely different environment and quality about it and one that attracts the more discerning traveller, a more mature financially better off gay tourist if you like. Fuerteventura is more appealing to couples or those that are looking for a far more relaxing holiday than other gay destinations offer. It is not heading for the sex tourists industry though no doubt there will be on the occasion, as it is in the straight community, the odd 'perv' that will insist on marring it for the rest.

Remember people that one 'Pink Euro' carries the same value as any other Euro. Statistically the gay community has a much larger disposable income and are generally more likely to spend it in what may be your bar/restaurant/villa? Utilise the gay section and this forum by actively promoting your business or villa to the gay community. You may be surprised by the potential this has for your own financial gain? Now I am sure that would have been welcomed throughout the recent recession! View this section with an open mind and not as a sexual encounter opportunity. It is a welcome sign to  the international gay community and it's friends and one that YOU may just benefit from?

On a last note:
Bar owners: Have a good stock of Gin and tonics in.
Villa owners: Please make sure that the cushions are plumped on arrival and that the net curtains are replaced by a stylish Austrian blind otherwise your reputation will be in ruins!

Thank you for such a considered and  eloquent reply. Cannot disagree with a single thing you say. Just a shame that others cannot post similarly.
We recently stayed in a B&B which turned out to be run by a gay couple. That fact was completely irrelevant to our stay: it was completely normal in every way (though maybe a bit more tasteful than others).
Now, it would be great if this section can be kept onlt to the relevant topics.

Nice post. Im a young 23 y/o gay guy coming to fuert in June. Even though I'm not the type to go to gran canaria or any destination that has an emphasis on being a GAY resort if you like, I would still like that acceptance from the local people and tourists/holiday people. Having this forum is just what gay people need to show them that even though the place is not full of men in drag, swinging from streetlights at 6 in the morning after leaving the local club, it can be a safe heaven for us.

I suppose because I'm not the camp , gay scene, loud and proud gay and I like sport and sport/cars/bikes etc that I may have different views to what acceptance means. On return from my holiday this year I will definately give some feedback on how "accepting" fuerteventura was.

Please keep this section alive as I feel no matter where in the world there needs to be some sort of voice for gay people.

Ollie
