Thinking of changing ownership of my apt to joint ownership with the wife. Anybody have any ideas as to
procedure, cost or timescale.

Think this is a job for an abogado.  Why not ask the one you originally used for the purchase?

Why not ask the Notary who completed the transaction for you. May be quite easy, I don't know.

I googled your answer out of curiosity and found this article. It is quite old and i am sure the taxes etc are different now but it may throw a bit of light on the subject. On reading that article from fifi it is quite obvious that you do need to consult a Spanish lawyer to try & minimise the financial impact as much as possible
