Discover the pre-Hispanic past of Fuerteventura at the Museo Arqueológico de Betancuria.
It's the ideal place to discover the way of life of the ancient inhabitants of the island in a building which represents the ancient architecture.

Visitors will receive information on the paleontological wealth of the Island.

There are photographs and models of native habitats, pottery, bone tools and molluscs to help you get an idea of the life of the Mahos.

There are religious idols made ​​of stone and information about Tindaya and its podomorfos (footprints) - a center of the magical-religious world of the ancient majoreros.

Ethnographic (the branch of anthropology that deals with the scientific description of specific human cultures) elements used until a few decades ago by majoreros complete the tour of this beautiful building.

The best way to complete a day on the beach in El Cotillo is to visit the Museo de la Pesca Tradicional located in Toston lighthouse (1897) - a mere five kilometres from town, in the area known as Punta Ballena.

Visitors to Toston lighthouse can discover the majoreros' links with the sea from the prehistoric period and the importance it had for fishing communities eaking a living.

Don't leave the museum without climbing the lighthouse. The breathtaking views of a landscape that combines white sand and blue sea are well worth a souvenir photo. (Panoramic if you can!)

Cuevo del Llano - Villaverde

One of the longest volcanic tubes in the world.


A visit to the Cueva del Llano in Villaverde offers the opportunity to explore the depths of the earth, to know which animals inhabited the island for thousands of years and how this volcanic lava tube was formed.

Take a guided tour of Fuerteventura below the surface.

La Cueva del Llano was formed after the eruption of Montaña Escanfraga over 800,000 years ago. Before delving into the depths of the cave, in the visitor centre, visitors can learn of the Fuerteventura's great geological variety - the oldest island of the Archipelago.

The Maxorata is one of the few places in the world where plutonic rocks can be found on the surface.

The tube has a unique inhabitant -  the Harvestmen Spider (Maiorerus randoi). The Cueva del Llano possesses the exact conditions that the spider requires.

This species is one of seven Canary arthropods that are in danger of extinction.

Cereal's importance throughout Fuerteventura's history prompted the Cabildo to create the Museo del Grano.

The collection and processing of cereal is illustrated with examples, objects, photos and text all of which help to convey the lifestyle of the original farmers.

The 'Cillas' were built to store the Church harvest.

If you want to see how sea salt is processed, visit the Salt Museum in the Salinas del Carmen, in Antigua.

Via texts and photographs you'll learn about the history of salt, and its applications over the centuries.

The tour will also illustrate the processing of salt, an industry that in the eastern islands employed hundreds of people throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Visit  La Alcogida to experience the lifestyle of Majorero farmers continued until just a few decades ago.
Stone houses welcome the visitor to Ecomuseum Alcogida located in the village of Tefía.
Visitors can tour seven houses of different architectural styles. From more complex constructions typical of the wealthiest families to the modest buildings of the humble Majorero peasant.
In La Alcogida you can watch artisans working with palm trees, kilns, mud, stone  and looms.

To see how the Majoreros lived their daily lives take a trip to the Centro de Interpretación Poblado de La Atalayita, in Pozo Negro.

The town of La Atalayita, inhabited since before the European conquest in the fifteenth century, is located in the valley of Pozo Negro beside a small hill called La Atalaya.

The ancient Aboriginal houses area among the 'badlands' formed by the lava eruptions from La Laguna Caldera and Caldera de Liria.

It's surprising to see how its inhabitants managed to adapt to the terrain and develop their habitat.
