Title: RadonGas
Post by: aicirtap on March 29, 2017, 21:59:12 PM
Hi Everyone.

I am considering relocating from the UK to Fuerteventura (Canary islands). I have made enquiries with a local estate agent who says Radon gas is not an issue in the Canary Islands. I find his answer surprising, as I understand the problem is global and particularly evident where igneous rock exists. I am aware of the need for testing, but would appreciate an independent opinion on the possibility and scale of problems likely in Fuerteventura.

If my query is outside the Forum's remit, a pointer to resources able to help would be appreciated. Also, any advice in general concerning property acquisition, in relation to the islands. would be most welcome. I should mention I am chiefly searching in Corralejo and Caleta.

Thanks in advance for your interest and time in looking at my post.

Regards
Anthony Hunter

If you believe there's a particular problem with igneous rocks, why on earth would you want to relocate to anywhere in the Canaries?  Anyway, I think you'd be safe in Fuerteventura as long as you continue to wear your tinfoil helmet.

When we lived in Devon we had a small radon detector. They must be readily available as everyone was given one by the government to assess the risk. New houses in areas affected had to have raised ventilated floors.
You may find it difficult to get a builder to meet those requirements, here!
This island, as all the islands, are one gigantic series of volcanoes.
If radon bothers you, this isn't the place for you.

Hi Bedouin and Archer

Thanks for your replies. I take your point on why consider the islands - but there are considerable other benefits to factor in.

In the UK the presence of Radon is a serious issue.  What I am trying to evaluate, is the existence of, or scale of, any problem and decide if overcoming any emerging facts would be feasible.

I hope this answer demonstrates my question has a serious intent. Meanwhile I shall certainly check my "tin-foil" headgear for maximum efficacy!

Regards

Tony

PS: To Archer, thanks for your response. Your comment are duly noted - I am not deterred at this stage, just in evaluation mode.

Hi

A point of order for you. Bedouin and Archer, given your comments about not coming to the Canary Islands, how come the estate agent claims to have never heard of the  problem of Radon gas?

I know, no guesses on your answer, FIND A NEW ESTATE AGENT. LOL.

I really don't think that you should worry too much.  Most buildings in Fuerteventura are constructed of concrete, and the chance of radon seeping inside is minimal.  Additionally, the fairly constant wind will disperse radon outside.  A study of potential radon exposure throughout Spain (including the Canaries) concluded there was low risk in most of Fuerteventura (see map below; green is low risk area).  You can read the whole report here - https://www.csn.es/images/stories/publicaciones/unitarias/informes_tecnicos/mapa_radn.pdf

Hi Bedouin

Many thanks for your post concerning the Spanish study, really helpful and exactly the answer I was looking for!

Regarding your answer to "TamaraEnLaPlaya", does everybody in Fuerteventura wear tinfoil helmets or is it just the latest fashion statement?

Anyway, now the easy bit begins - selling up here in the UK, packing everything for shipping ( that's the last we'll see of our stuff then ), and roll out the sunbeds!

Regards and thanks again, see you on the beach

Hi Archer

Aw! I'll just have try and unload the shares I've just bought in Bacofoil then - and there I was thinking I was on to a sure-fire winner!

I've disguised my tinfoil helmet, it's inside my woolly hat at the moment. In the summer I have one of those little battery fans on top. I wouldn't want anyone thinking I was strange, after all, naturists aren't meant to wear anything!  ;D
