Title: Lanzarote: Village`s delight as nudist status finally confirmed
Post by: TamaraEnLaPlaya on May 04, 2017, 00:13:39 AM
From Tenerife News:

Council chiefs in Spain`s first-ever nudist village have finally made it official!

Thousands of visitors to Haria on Lanzarote are aware that picturesque Charco del Palo has a nudist beach popular with all nationalities, including the Brits.

But less well known is the fact that the entire village is a nudist zone, often leading to raised eyebrows when tourists encounter naturists walking around the streets!

Now, the local council has agreed to bestow official “nudist resort” status on Charco del Palo (population around 160) following a request from the residents` association.

A massive new sign has been erected at the entrance to the village and the Mayor, Marciano Acuña says: “Everyone is welcome.”

Vice-president of the Charco del Palo residents` committee, Marco Moeschlin told the Spanish press: “There are other naturist beaches in the Canary Islands and elsewhere but this area is unique because it is a whole town, open to anyone who wants to come. It has no boundaries, no doors, it`s not private and access is not restricted to anyone. And you can stroll through the urbanisation completely naked without anyone looking at you or being surprised.”

Campaigners say they are absolutely thrilled with the official designation which they have been pressing for over the last 40 years.

Charco del Palo became popular with nudists in the 1970s and it has become a much sought-after holiday location with accommodation and activities especially ai-med at naturists.

Its environment is described as “paradise” and it features natural rock pools with crystal clear water for nude swimming as well as a white sand beach for swim-ming.

Haria council believes official designation of “Spain`s first-ever nudist village” will bring in even more visitors and it is planning further investment and improvements in the resort.

The Naturalist Association of Lanzarote said it was delighted with the desig-nation and wants the news to be shared with as many people as possible. The organisation believes Charco del Palo was actually the first nudist village in the world, not just in Spain.

Residents joined council officials for the unveiling of the commemorative sign which has been described as “so big, no-one will miss it!”

One of the popular tourist booking sites, charcodelpalo.com says of the village: ” It`s simply great when you can jump barely into the sea, so the people are usually unclothed right on the beach although there is no general constraint to maintain naturism. The village has preserved its character of a small and cozy holiday village far away from mass tourism up to now.”

Nudity is permitted everywhere in the village but not necessarily in every shop or restaurant though people without clothes are a normal sight on the terraces.

Think I'd need a bit more going on / amenities / bars & restaurants etc  before I'd be inclined to visit for more than just a day but a positive story all the same

Does it actually have a beach ?

I visited for a half hour once. From what I saw, not so much a beach, more of a rocky swimming platform.
