Post by: MLA on February 09, 2015, 14:19:10 PM
We have an account with Banco Sabadell and our annual fees (shown below) have just been sent to us, do these seem reasonable? If not, what should we be looking at? Any advice welcomed.

Currency: EUR  Holders 2

Fees
Maintenance  96,00
Cash withdrawals (with or w/out card) 1,40
Payment cards  25,00

Hi MLA I also received this statement which I am not particularly happy with...spoke to Solbank  and advised that I deposit over â,¬1000 each month and thought that all charges would have been removed...apparently not!

We have a Banco Sabadell Expansion account which is fee free as long as you fund it with over 700 euros per month.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately we are not in a position to make regular large deposits, so any thoughts on which account would be best.

Are you resident, MLA, as in having a green slip of paper with your NIE on it? If so, just take it along to Sabadell and they'll remove the quarterly charge. That's for non-residents only. You'll still have to pay for a few things but the biggie is just to cover increased risks and admin (and they probably think someone with an account "abroad" can pay through the nose).

Hi SheilaW, thanks for the info. We are not residents yet but when fully retired may consider it. Our thought at the moment is to, when retired have a base in the U.K. spend the winters in Fuerte and travel. Our concern about becoming a resident, is health cover. We are not sure whether we should risk breaking our ties to the U.K. any advice would be welcomed.

Hi MLA we are planning to retire to Fuerte next year and have looked into the healthcare side and as far as we understand as both the UK and Spain are members of the EU there is a reciprocal arrangement that allows free healthcare in Spain for retired expats. If I am wrong no doubt someone will correct me. :)

Provided you have reached state pension age you will be entitled to the same cover as a Spanish national. I think spouses are covered once one has reached the necessary age, can someone confirm?
As far as I am aware, there is no 'state'  dental cover.

Also, the way I have read it on various websites, if you sign up to the Spanish healthcare system, you lose your right to UK healthcare?

Anyone any experience/advice on this one?

Thanks Deso, a definitive answer would be really useful. The only worry is how long before EU rules change again?

My understanding of the reciprocal healthcare system (as it stands currently):
A person in receipt of UK state pension and their dependents can receive reciprocal healthcare in Spain, apparently funded 'en masse' annually (not paid per person, per prescription!) by the British government. You need to apply for the relevant forms from the Overseas Healthcare team in Newcastle, get them processed by the INSS office in Puerto del Rosario as part of your Residencia process, and then register with a Centro Salud in your town. As stated previously, you get the same level of care/services as a Spanish person which is not necessarily what you have been used to on the NHS.
The UK NHS is Residence based - once you are no longer living there you are not entitled to use it as before. So, by applying for your Overseas forms you are effectively denouncing your right to the NHS. However, once you are living  here you can ask Newcastle to issue you with a new EHIC card which you can then use when you visit the UK to access emergency treatment.

If you are in Fuerte on 24th Feb why not go along to the British Consulate event in Caleta where they are apparently going to be clarifying this and similar subjects?

Thanks TamaraEnLaPlaya, that has certainly given us something to consider. We need to research what the NHS offers over or under what's available here.

This is correct - you need to apply for EU form S1, which then needs registering with the INSS. We then pay Spain an annual amount (currently around â,¬4400 per person) to cover healthcare costs for a year. This is an average amount agreed at EU level and is paid whether the individual uses the Spanish system or not.

This used to be the case but a recent change (from 6 April this year) means that a registered pensioner S1 holder may now come back to use the UK NHS, on the same basis as someone resident in the UK. So now you are basically covered by two health systems.

The EHIC card issued by Newcastle as described above is for use on any trips to other countries - it is not to be used in the UK (or Spain).

Hi Hellrider, thanks for confirming the other comments.
However, I had a letter from Newcastle re my EHIC saying that they would issue this new EHIC card as I was a S1 ExPat pensioner and that this card was for use when visiting the UK, and other qualifying countries. I still have the letter! However this is now a moot point as you tell us that the NHS is now available for any treatment, emergency or otherwise, for S1 ExPats.

Hi Hellrider. Thanks for contributing to these posts (thank you button not currently available!). It's really helpful to have someone who actually knows the facts rather than us just going on our own experiences, or hearsay, or rumour.............

If that's what the letter says then it's wrong! I'll have a word....

(but yes, as you say, it's a moot point now)
