A few odd localised showers in Corralejo today but around 5pm the heavens opened and I got drenched. Driving  back to Tindaya all the roads were pretty wet and I could see the rain moving to the SW in front of me. Very chilly here this evening, 11C, with a brisk NE blowing. A lot of cloud moving steadily N to S.

Tindaya - miserable. Cold, windy, wet. A few rainbows were the only bright spots. The occasional patches of blue sky disappeared before you could blink and at times the rain was pelting me horizontally from a cloud a good K away while I was stood in 'sunshine'!

How are you weather watchers viewing this current spell ? Exceptionally bad and prolonged or fairly standard for this time of year ?

This is the fourth consecutive winter that I have been coming to the island, each year for at least six weeks and I can confidently state that this is the worst weather I have ever experienced here. In previous years we have obviously had bad spells but after maybe 3 or 4 days things have improved. This spell started in the middle of last week so we are 9 or 10 days in !

From your point of view is the length of this current bad spell pretty unusual or not totally atypical for this time of year ?

Thks,

Ernie

Thks,

Ernie

Morning Ernie.

This is the third winter we have lived here, and probably the 20th January we have been here for the first time in 1979, and my take on it { for what it is worth } is it has been wetter it has been colder, it has been windier, but never so wet, windy and so cold for so long, I was talking to a couple of friends last night one who has lived here for fourteen years and another for seven years, and both were of the same opinion as I.

But looking back at some historical data

temps for January are

Normal 17.2 Warmest 20.2 Coldest 14.4 Days of rain 3

February

Normal 17.5 Warmest 20.6 coldest 14.2 Days of rain 2

I could not find any data on wind strength.

So the temperature seems to be about average, rainfall has far exceeded the average, but all in all the general opinion is that it is pretty unusual for it to be this wet windy and cold for so long a period.

The good news is that looking at the forecast for the next two or three weeks it would appear it will be less windy with no significant rain, but no increase in the temp either.

I will be interested to listen other peoples take on this subject.

Thanks John. My experience is much more limited than yours so it is a relief to hear that this spell is being regarded as somewhat unusual. Fingers crossed it stays that way in the future. I look forward to hearing other people’s opinions.

That's encouraging John

3 weeks from today and we will be ensconced at El Cotillo

Thanks again to all the weather watchers - great photos and up-to-date reports make the times between visits bearable (just about)  :D

Hi Ernie
This is the worst 'prolonged' spell of mixed bad weather that I can remember. The chilly nights are more normally mitigated by lovely sunny days which makes it all seem so much better. In my experience rain is more common in late autumn/early winter and tends to be one or two really heavy sessions, not this constant showers day after day. I've found the house is getting colder in general - my take is that it's not getting the sun to warm the walls/roof, the wind is whipping away what little heat the sun is producing, and everything feels a little damp with the constant showers keeping the humidity up. Never had to use this much interior heating before. Our calor gas fire has been a lifesaver!
Talking to a friend in the building trade yesterday and he said last week was the first time he's been laid off for a week due to wet weather in the 15 years he's been working here. (Unfortunately all his scheduled work was roofing.)

Tindaya - Saturday - wind, wind, wind, lovely bright sky to start the morning gave false hope as shortly followed by grey cloud for the rest of the day, and still wind, wind, wind from NNE. Not quite as cold tonight, only down to 12C (can't believe I've just written that, most winters it would be the lowest of the year.). Perhaps only one hot water bottle tonight instead of two!

A much nicer morning and early afternoon, plenty of sun although still a lot of cloud around. The wind had eased a bit and moved to NW. Mid afternoon however the grey cloud took over, the wind strengthened and chilled again and the showers started at 6pm, several of them quite heavy. Down to 12C now.

Caleta.

Yesterday, the cloud cleared earlier than forecast, from 10:30 it was a sunny day with some cloud, temp reached 19 C, but the wind persisted Northerly 14/15 Mph, which made it feel closer to 15 C. it started to rain around 19:30 and continued on and off until 23:00, and rained again in the early hours.

Today

07:15

Reasonably clear sky, Temp 12 C wind northerly 20/22 Mph, but no condensation, just the dampness left over from the rain.

08:15

A very bright start, almost cloudless in whichever direction you look, except for the usual cloud out to The East looking through the windows you would think normal service has resumed, but going outside dispells that notion immediately.

Temp. 15 C

Wind. Northerly 20/22 Mph

Humidity. 61%.

Visibility. Very Good.

Sea. A 6 Ft swell.

UV. 5.

Forecast

A breezy but sunny day, temp to reach 17/18 C but feel closer to 15 C, wind to ease slightly through the day, but increase again early evening.

Tindaya - lots of blue sky but still plenty of cloud about. Brisk wind from NW made it very chilly unless you were in a totally protected spot. We appeared to have had some rain on Sunday night. Temp down to 12C at present.
